Why Oman is Our Favorite Country So Far!

August 28, 2024 · In: Travel

Traveling is one of those experiences that can completely change your perspective on life. Every new country, every new culture you immerse yourself in, adds a layer of richness to your journey. But every once in a while, you come across a place that resonates with you on a deeper level, a place that feels like home even when it’s a thousand miles away. For us, that place is Oman.

From the moment we stepped off the plane, Oman captivated us with its stunning landscapes, warm hospitality, and rich cultural heritage. We’ve traveled to many countries, but there’s something about Oman that keeps calling us back. Here’s why Oman has become our favorite country so far.

The Breathtaking Landscapes

Oman is a land of contrasts, where rugged mountains meet vast deserts, and pristine beaches give way to lush green oases. Whether you’re exploring the towering peaks of the Al Hajar Mountains or wandering through the endless sands of the Wahiba Desert, Oman’s natural beauty is nothing short of awe-inspiring.

One of our most unforgettable experiences was hiking in the Jebel Shams, also known as the “Mountain of the Sun.” Standing at the edge of the Grand Canyon of Oman, with the wind whipping through our hair and the sun setting in the distance, we couldn’t help but feel a sense of wonder at the raw beauty of the landscape. It’s moments like these that make Oman so special – the feeling of being completely immersed in nature, away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

And then there’s the coastline. Oman’s beaches are some of the most pristine we’ve ever seen, with crystal-clear waters and soft, golden sands. We spent countless hours relaxing on the shores of Al Bustan Beach, watching the waves roll in and out, and soaking up the peaceful atmosphere. Whether you’re looking to relax or embark on an adventure, Oman’s diverse landscapes offer something for everyone.

The Warm and Welcoming People

Another reason we fell in love with Oman is the people. Omanis are some of the warmest and most hospitable people we’ve ever encountered on our travels. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted with genuine smiles and open arms. Whether we were wandering through the souqs or exploring remote villages, we were always made to feel welcome.

One of our favorite memories is being invited into a local family’s home for a traditional Omani meal. We were strangers, yet they welcomed us like old friends, sharing stories and laughter over plates of delicious food. It’s this kind of hospitality that makes Oman feel like home, even when you’re far from your own.

We also found that Omanis are incredibly proud of their culture and heritage, and they’re eager to share it with visitors. Whether it’s a shopkeeper explaining the history behind a traditional craft or a local guide sharing stories of Oman’s past, we were constantly learning something new about this fascinating country.

The Rich Cultural Heritage

Oman’s rich cultural heritage is another reason why it has become our favorite country. From ancient forts to bustling souqs, Oman is a country steeped in history and tradition. Every corner of the country tells a story, and we were captivated by the depth of Oman’s cultural landscape.

One of our favorite places to visit was the Nizwa Fort, a stunning example of Omani architecture that dates back to the 17th century. As we wandered through the fort’s winding corridors and climbed to the top of the watchtower, we could almost hear the echoes of history whispering through the walls. It was a powerful reminder of Oman’s long and storied past.

Another highlight of our trip was exploring the Muttrah Souq in Muscat. The souq is a sensory overload, with the scent of frankincense wafting through the air, the vibrant colors of textiles and spices, and the sounds of traders haggling over prices. It’s a place where tradition meets modernity, and we loved every minute of it.

The Sense of Peace and Tranquility

In today’s fast-paced world, finding a place where you can truly relax and disconnect is rare. But in Oman, we found that sense of peace and tranquility that we had been searching for. Whether we were camping under the stars in the Wahiba Desert or enjoying a quiet moment in the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, we felt a deep sense of calm that is hard to come by.

One of our most peaceful experiences was spending a night in a traditional Bedouin camp in the desert. As we sat around the campfire, listening to the sound of the wind rustling through the dunes and gazing up at the star-filled sky, we felt completely at peace. It was a moment of pure serenity, and it’s one that we’ll carry with us forever.

Oman has a way of slowing you down, of making you appreciate the simple things in life. It’s a place where you can truly disconnect from the outside world and reconnect with yourself. And in today’s hectic world, that’s something incredibly valuable.

The Unforgettable Adventures

Finally, Oman is a country that’s full of adventure. Whether you’re trekking through the mountains, exploring ancient ruins, or diving into the deep blue sea, there’s no shortage of exciting things to do. Oman is a country that invites you to explore, to push your limits, and to discover the world in a whole new way.

One of our most thrilling adventures was snorkeling in the crystal-clear waters of the Daymaniyat Islands. As we swam among colorful coral reefs and schools of tropical fish, we were in awe of the vibrant marine life that calls Oman’s waters home. It was an experience that left us breathless – quite literally!

We also loved exploring Oman’s many wadis, or river valleys. Wadi Shab, with its turquoise pools and lush palm groves, was a particular favorite. Hiking through the wadi, clambering over rocks, and swimming in the cool, clear water was an adventure we’ll never forget. Oman is a country that’s full of surprises, and every day brought a new and exciting experience.

Conclusion: Why Oman Stands Out

Oman is a country that has captured our hearts in a way that no other place has. From its breathtaking landscapes to its warm and welcoming people, from its rich cultural heritage to its sense of peace and tranquility, Oman is a country that offers something truly special. It’s a place where we’ve found adventure, made unforgettable memories, and felt a deep connection to the land and its people.

Every time we think about our travels, Oman stands out as a place that has left a lasting impression on us. It’s a country that we’ll always hold dear, and it’s a place that we can’t wait to return to. If you’re looking for a travel destination that’s full of beauty, culture, and adventure, Oman should be at the top of your list. It’s our favorite country so far, and we’re sure it will become one of yours too.

Our upstate STR is a legal mother-daughter, so the loft is technically the in-law suite! It's separated from the main house by a utility room which allows each unit to feel sufficiently private. From what we know, the previous owners finished this unit around 2020, so it's decently updated and with the wood clad interiors, there wasn't much for us to do besides paint the bathroom and furnish it all!

We've added more decorative touches like wall are and throws since and plan on having it professionally photographed next spring.

What’s spookier than vulnerability? 👻 I live som What’s spookier than vulnerability? 👻

I live somewhere between wanting to quiet the ego and not post on socials because I am a humble farmers daughter - and - knowing that in 2025 building a brand means showing up online and sharing your work!

But that can be kind of scary - because who cares about what I’m doing or what I have to say? But also, who cares what others think?

This is me (Paula) getting over that fear in real time 💗 this will be clunky and fun, enjoy the ride 😅
