Delve into the form, meaning, and atmosphere of Education City Mosque—elevated on pillars, illuminated with calligraphy, and shaped by faith and contemporary design.

Stunning exterior of Education City Mosque with its twin calligraphic minarets
The Education City Mosque, also known as the Minaretein building, is a standout of modern religious architecture in Doha. Designed by Mangera Yvars Architects and completed in 2013, this mosque is raised on five massive pillars—symbolizing the Five Pillars of Islam—and crowned by two soaring minarets etched with Arabic calligraphy that draw the eye skyward in spiritual contemplation.

Inside, the rhythmic geometry of mashrabiya and calligraphy continue. The suspended prayer hall floats above an undercroft, creating a feeling of lightness and introspection. Natural light filters in through decorative screens, illuminating the serene space and reinforcing the connection between knowledge, light, and faith.
Design & Symbolism
The mosque is part of the Qatar Faculty of Islamic Studies (QFIS), located within the vast Education City campus. Its plan spirals from educational spaces into the sacred core, embodying the concept that “knowledge stems from faith.” The building acts as both a campus centerpiece and a place for public worship.
Additionally, the structure incorporates thoughtful environmental design: the elevated hall creates natural shade, while the four-story ablution cascade cools the entrance zone. The ceramic façade helps diffuse glare and reduce heat, showcasing how sustainability and heritage can coexist.
