With its stunning landscapes, rich history, and hospitable people, Oman is a must-visit destination for any traveler looking for an off-the-beaten-path adventure. In this post, we’ll be sharing the ideal 8-day itinerary for exploring Oman’s natural beauty, including Muscat, Nizwa, Al Hajar Mountains, Salalah, and Wahiba Sands.
Day 1: Exploring Muscat
You’ll likely be flying into Muscat, the capital city of Oman – the perfect place to being your Omani adventure. Visit the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, one of the largest mosques in the world, and marvel at its intricate architecture and stunning interior. Then, head to Muttrah District, essentially the old city where you can marvel at the beautiful coastline and historical architecture. There you will find Muttrah Souq, a traditional market where you can find everything from spices and textiles to antiques and jewelry. End your day with a sunset cruise on a dhow, a traditional Omani sailing vessel, and admire the city skyline from the water. Bonus if you can also squeeze in a visit to the Royal Opera House Muscat – a stunning cultural space that blends traditional Omani design with modern aesthetics.
Day 2-3: Exploring Nizwa and Al Hajar Mountains
From Muscat head to Nizwa, a short hour and a half drive away. We should warn you – this drive into the mountains is an adventure in itself! Nizwa is a historic city known for its traditional crafts and agricultural products. Visit Nizwa Fort, an impressive castle built in the 17th century, and the adjacent Nizwa Souq, where you can shop for local handicrafts and souvenirs. Then, head to the nearby Al Hajar Mountains, a range of rugged peaks and stunning valleys. Spend the night in a traditional mountain village, or a resort like the Alila Jabal Akhdar – and most definitely go hiking in the morning to discover the truly breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.
Day 4-5: Exploring Salalah
Fly to Salalah, a coastal city in the south of Oman known for its beautiful beaches and lush greenery. Visit the Al Baleed Archaeological Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site that showcases the ancient history of the region. Then, spend a day exploring the beaches and waterfalls of Wadi Darbat, a scenic valley that offers plenty of opportunities for hiking, swimming, and picnicking. Be sure to plan accordingly as the best time to experience the lush greenery is during the “Khareef” or monsoon season. This typically occurs from late June to early September. We didn’t make it to Salalah on our last trip to Oman but we will definitely be planning a drip during monsoon season soon.

Day 6-7: Camping in Wahiba Sands
Drive to the Wahiba Sands, a vast desert that is home to the Bedouin people and their traditional way of life. Spend the night in a traditional Bedouin camp or wild camp and go dune bashing, camel riding, and stargazing. In the morning, watch the sunrise over the dunes and learn about the culture and history of the Bedouin people from your local guide. We chose to wild camp with complete camping set-up rental from Nomad Tours out of Muscat and it was the best thing we ever did.
Day 8: Visiting a Famous Wadi or Beach
Spend an additional day exploring one of Oman’s famous wadis, such as Wadi Shab or Wadi Bani Khalid. These stunning natural canyons are home to crystal-clear pools, hidden waterfalls, and lush vegetation. Hike through the wadi, swim in its cool waters, and marvel at the beauty of Oman’s natural landscapes. While we didn’t get to visit a Wadi on our last trip to Oman, we did spend a few nights wild camping on Sifa Beach North nestled between the mountains and the Gulf of Oman.
