Must-Do Day Trips from Muscat, Oman: Top Muscat Oman Day Tours & Excursions

Muscat, the capital of Oman, is an enchanting mix of modern elegance and deep-rooted traditions. Whether you’re strolling along the Mutrah Corniche, marveling at the grandeur of the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, or enjoying a sunset by the Arabian Sea, Muscat itself is captivating. But one of the best things about staying in Muscat is the variety of incredible day trips just beyond the city.

Having spent time in Oman, we’ve fallen in love with its diverse landscapes, from the rugged mountains to the endless deserts and serene wadis. If you’re visiting Muscat and want to make the most of your stay, here are the must-do day trips that will take you deeper into Oman’s beauty—without having to pack your bags for an extended road trip.

1. Best Muscat Oman Day Tour: What to See in One Day

Before venturing outside the city, consider spending a full day exploring Muscat itself. A well-planned day tour of Muscat will take you through its cultural landmarks, historical sites, and stunning coastline.

Start your morning at the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, an architectural masterpiece with intricate chandeliers and one of the largest handmade carpets in the world. Next, visit the Royal Opera House Muscat, a symbol of Omani elegance and artistry.

Stroll through the lively Mutrah Souq, where the scent of frankincense fills the air, and you can shop for traditional silver jewelry, textiles, and souvenirs. Nearby, take in the picturesque views along the Mutrah Corniche, with its old merchant houses and fishing boats.

In the afternoon, explore the Al Jalali and Al Mirani forts, standing guard over Muscat’s harbor, and visit the National Museum of Oman for a deeper dive into the country’s heritage. Finally, wrap up your day with a relaxing sunset at Qurum Beach, one of Muscat’s most scenic coastal spots.

2. Wadi Shab & Bimmah Sinkhole Day Trip from Muscat

A short two-hour drive from Muscat, Wadi Shab is a dream for adventure seekers. This picturesque canyon features turquoise pools, waterfalls, and even a hidden cave accessible by swimming through a narrow opening. The hike to the wadi’s pools is easy enough for most travelers, but rewarding with stunning views at every turn.

Not far from Wadi Shab, you’ll find the Bimmah Sinkhole, a natural limestone crater filled with emerald-green water. A perfect place for a refreshing swim after your wadi hike! This combination of Wadi Shab and Bimmah Sinkhole makes for an unforgettable day trip from Muscat.

3. Nizwa & Jebel Akhdar Day Tour from Muscat: History & Mountain Views

For a taste of Oman’s rich heritage, head to Nizwa, Oman’s historic capital. The Nizwa Fort offers breathtaking panoramic views of the city and an insight into Omani history. If you’re visiting on a Friday, don’t miss the famous Nizwa Souq, where locals trade livestock, silver jewelry, and fresh dates.

After exploring Nizwa, drive up to Jebel Akhdar, known as the Green Mountain. With cooler temperatures and terraced farms growing pomegranates and roses, Jebel Akhdar is a refreshing contrast to the desert landscapes. This area is best visited with a 4×4, as the ascent is steep but worth it for the views and peaceful surroundings.

Our upstate STR is a legal mother-daughter, so the loft is technically the in-law suite! It's separated from the main house by a utility room which allows each unit to feel sufficiently private. From what we know, the previous owners finished this unit around 2020, so it's decently updated and with the wood clad interiors, there wasn't much for us to do besides paint the bathroom and furnish it all!

We've added more decorative touches like wall are and throws since and plan on having it professionally photographed next spring.

I live somewhere between wanting to quiet the ego and not post on socials because I am a humble farmers daughter - and - knowing that in 2025 building a brand means showing up online and sharing your work!

But that can be kind of scary - because who cares about what I’m doing or what I have to say? But also, who cares what others think?

This is me (Paula) getting over that fear in real time 💗 this will be clunky and fun, enjoy the ride 😅
